DIGITIZATION FOR HEALTH IN AFRICA: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Health Equity and Universal Health Coverage in Africa

The International Medical Exchange, in partnership with the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth (ISfTeH), recently convened the opening session of the Artificial Intelligence for African Health Initiative—a global executive webinar series supporting the lead-up to the AI for African Health Initiative Stakeholders Conference in Morocco in April 2027.

The discussion focused on a shared priority: harnessing artificial intelligence to advance health equity and universal health coverage across Africa.

Key messages from the session included:

Africa must be positioned not only as a recipient of digital health innovation, but as a leader in the ethical design, deployment and scaling of AI-driven health systems.

Digital public infrastructure—including health identifiers, interoperable data systems and shared platforms—is essential for sustainable AI adoption.

AI can strengthen disease surveillance, support frontline health workers and improve access to care, but it cannot replace the foundational needs of functioning health systems.

Responsible implementation requires strong governance, data protection, local capacity, sustainable financing and African ownership.

Moving beyond isolated pilot projects will require coordinated action across all 54 African Union member states.

The webinar brought together leaders and experts from international health, digital innovation, public health, regulation and biomedical research to explore how Africa can move from promising ideas to practical, locally relevant and sustainable implementation.

As the initiative continues, ISfTeH and its partners remain committed to building partnerships, strengthening capacity and supporting meaningful dialogue on the future of AI and digital health in Africa.
